I have been working as an artist in Somerset since moving here in 1984.
I studied both in New York and Bristol, where in 1997 I received an MA
in printmaking. My work explores the specific aspects of each location
- those things which make it unique. I am attracted to the timelessness
of landforms and how they contrast with the interventions of society and
agriculture.
Working on-site I make quick sketches and notations on colour, time of
day, date, weather and location. In my studio, I combine this information
with my emotional and visual recollection of the place to create paintings
and drawings.
My photo-etchings are made from my photographs of the land and cityscape,
manipulated in Photoshop and transferred onto a light sensitive aluminium
plate. The plate is exposed to UV light and the unexposed areas washed
away. After a hardening process, the plate is etched in a copper sulphate/salt
solution. The resulting image is then printed on an etching press.
I am a member of Fingerprint, Somerset Printmakers and am part of the
Spring Farm Arts collective
at the former Moorlinch Vineyard where my studio is located.
